However, with the right accessories, you can still make your Raspberry Pi computer powerful. Of course, one of the things you need to consider is where you store your Raspberry Pi 4.
If you want to run an operating system on your Raspberry Pi computer, you’ll need a micro-SD as storage for your computer. Yes, you don’t need something as big as a full hard drive or SSD, as a micro SD is enough for a Raspberry Pi computer.

But how much space do you need for the Raspberry Pi?
For a Raspberry Pi computer, 8 GB is already enough, especially if you only use it for basic stuff. However, in most cases 8GB is too little, especially if you use your Raspberry Pi for important functions that require more memory.
In this regard, you can use a 16GB micro SD card, which is usually the most common option for many ordinary Raspberry Pi users, as they find that 16GB of storage is already sufficient for most of their computing needs. This may even be more than enough if you use the Raspberry Pi occasionally.
However, it is safer to walk as much as possible. That’s where the 32GB option comes in, as you may want to make sure you have enough storage for future projects.
If you have a 32GB micro SD card for your Raspberry Pi, this will certainly be more than enough, as 32GB or less is the recommended storage for your Raspberry Pi computer.

However, you have the option to upgrade to a larger size by using a 64GB card, which should be more than enough for your Raspberry Pi computer (the maximum size is currently 1TB, an example here on Amazon). Sure, more is always better, but there’s a catch.
The Raspberry Pi bootloader only supports read-only file systems formatted in FAT16 and FAT32. In case you didn’t know: Micro SD cards from 64GB onwards have the exFAT file system format. This means you can’t use the 64GB right out of the box and you’ll need to reformat it to FAT32 to use it on your Raspberry Pi computer.
Normally Etcher and the Raspberry Pi imager handle this automatically, but with some distributions this can lead to strange problems, please note the following

Usually, a 16GB micro SD card is sufficient to install any of the most common Raspberry Pi distributions. This is the minimum required for the installation, it does not take into account packages and files you add later.

Memory requirements for the most common Linux distributions on the Raspberry Pi
Lakka, for example, requires less than 1 GB to be installed on an SD card. But once installed, you give the game an out-of-control ROM, which can quickly increase the amount of memory required. For example, most PlayStation games are over 512MB each.
The same goes for the Raspberry Pi operating system. A 16 GB SD memory card is useful for installing any version. If you use it as a desktop, you can quickly add downloads, documents and new applications, quickly doubling the space you need.
Therefore, it’s probably a good idea to choose an SD card of at least 32 GB (and that’s what most users in our survey seem to do).
Adding memory to a Raspberry Pi
As mentioned above, more space is always better when it comes to storage. This applies to your Raspberry Pi computer. However, there may be a slight problem when using larger micro SD cards, such as those with 64 GB and above.
In most cases, the Raspberry Pi imager and writer will create a partition with the required size for the image file. Most operating systems (e.g. Raspberry Pi OS) will then expand the partition to the maximum available size on first boot. You don’t have to do anything in this area. Definitely look into it for more exotic distributions, though. The first step after installing a system is to expand the partition itself.
You can also expand your Raspberry Pi computer’s storage space with a USB storage device. This is the best way to expand the storage space of your Raspberry Pi computer. You will never run out of storage because you can easily replace your flash drive with another one. And if you’re using a current Raspberry model (3 and up), you can even install the operating system on a USB stick.
For example, you can use many different USB drives for your Raspberry Pi. B. a compact flash drive, an external hard drive, or even an SSD, which is a good option for you because of its speed and performance (this is my favorite SSD, by the way).

SanDisk Ultra 32 GB
The SanDisk Ultra 32GB is the best option for general computer use, as it covers almost all of your storage capacity needs. However, this is not the best option if you are looking for speed as it is not the fastest micro SD card on the market.
However, it’s not the slowest either, which is why it’s in the middle of the list of best devices for general computing, especially if speed doesn’t really interest you but you do need enough space on your micro SD memory card. You can try out the SanDisk Ultra 32GB here.
SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB
The storage capacity of the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB, which you can find here, is similar to that of the Ultra 32GB. However, the difference is that this micro SD card performs better than the Ultra card in terms of speed and performance.
This makes it the best choice for those who need memory and performance, for example. B. When playing games or using their Raspberry Pi computer for tasks and applications that require more speed and power from the storage device.

Samsung EVO Select 64 GB
Although 32GB micro-SD cards are already more than enough for most people, there will always be Raspberry Pi users who are not satisfied with 32GB of storage, especially if they use their computer for gaming. That’s where the Samsung EVO Select 64GB comes in, as it has twice as much storage as most of the other options on this list. Performance is also comparable to the SanDisk Extreme Pro, especially in terms of write speeds.

If you only use your Raspberry Pi computer for basic computing functions, such as viewing and creating certain documents, you don’t need anything more powerful than the Kingston Canvas Select 16GB. This micro SD card is also the cheapest option for you, as it really doesn’t cost much, but can already perform the basic functions. It provides enough speed and memory for most ordinary Raspberry Pi users.
